As a massive fan of Apple TV's Severance, I have become obsessed with the visual language of the show. Amongst the vast array of incredible design in the show is this book, The You You Are. The fictional book is a treasure trove for some of the show's unique comedy and has been a connection point between a few friends.
THE PROJECT
Apple released an exclusive 8-chapter excerpt as an audiobook on Apple Books. When I discovered it I became consumed with the idea of making it a real physical book to share with friends. After a week of thorough research and collection of samples, I began creating a real physical copy of The You You Are.
THE APPROACH
The first step was transcribing the audiobook into text to be laid out into chapter form. Once I had all of the text laid out, I meticulously copy-edited all of it, reading the 8 chapters from back to front close to 5 times, before then perfecting the typesetting. When completed, I had a definitive size to which I could now begin designing the front and back covers, as well as the spine. I painstakingly hunted down the fonts used in the shows prop using screen grabs and some released media to recreate a show-accurate copy of the book.
THE GOAL
The goal was ultimately fun and practice. I found that I really enjoy the process of setting type and massaging lines of type to create a satisfyingly perfect block of text. The result is a book that is printed, as well as a double-sided insert using the contents of the prop books inner dust jacket covers, that I've given to friends to read and laugh to.
